I found myself explaining this to several coffee drinking friends of mine recently. It got me to thinking that maybe others are confused too. So, let’s get down to it. Here is an in depth look at what makes each coffee drink unique as well as what the key variations are between the Cappuccino, Flat White, and Latte.
We’ll start with the Cappuccino. The Cappuccino is an espresso-based coffee drink which is generally composed of equal parts espresso, steamed milk, and milk foam. The Cappuccino originated in Italy. It has become a popular drink in the United States as well as other parts of the world. For many, the Cappuccino is the first coffee drink they try next to their regular cup of drip coffee or espresso.
Next up we have the Flat White. The Flat White has gained popularity in recent years, especially here in New York City coffee shops. The Flat White is said to have its origins in Australia and New Zealand during the 1980s. Both countries claim to have invented it. What is most likely true is that it was evolving in that part of the world during that time.
The millennial drink
Newer on the scene as compared to the Cappuccino, this drink is the “Millennial” of the coffee drinks. It has only been in existence about forty years.
A Flat White is an espresso-based coffee drink, with a higher coffee-to-milk ratio and a thinner layer of microfoam on top. This combination results in a stronger and smoother taste.
Last up we have another classic drink in the Latte. The Latte, or Caffè Latte in Italian, is a coffee drink made with espresso and steamed milk, traditionally served in a glass, with a thin layer of frothed milk on top. Caffè means coffee in Italian. Not to be confused with Café with one F which is more closely translated to a “bar” which would be the place you would drink the Caffè.
It’s in the foam
The key difference between a Cappuccino, Flat White, and Latte is in the milk texture and proportion to espresso. A Cappuccino will have the most foam, while a Flat White has a velvety, microfoam texture with a higher coffee-to-milk ratio with a kick, and the Latte has the most milk.
If you prefer more of a foamy and frothy taste, go with the Cappuccino. If you prefer more of the strength to be in the coffee taste, go with a Flat White. If you like more milk, it would be a Latte for you.
