The Espresso Machine and It’s History

‘Tis the season for flavored and themed coffee drinks. Whether a pumpkin spice latte, an apple spiced chai latte, a peppermint cappuccino, you can’t help but notice seasonal concoctions sprouting up on every coffee shop menu.

This always gets me thinking… Am I the only person that still prefers a good ole cup of Joe with a splash of milk, or an espresso, to the sugary sweet holiday coffee drinks?

I know there must be other coffee loyalists out there that don’t give up their daily brew for a PSL. Right?

In that spirit, for this month’s column, I salute the espresso machine. Here’s a bit of history for you.

In 1884, an Italian inventor named Angelo Moriondo had been awarded the patent for a first-of-its-kind, steam-powered coffee brewing machine. Fifteen years later, a man named Luigi Bezzera patented an improved single shot machine, which made it possible for the espresso to quickly and directly land in a cup.

In 1906 at the Milan World’s Fair, Desiderio Pavoni, who had bought Bezzera‘s patent, began to reproduce the espresso machine on a larger scale and named it the “Ideale” and its delicious outpouring came to be known as the “Cafe Espresso.”

To all my fellow readers who will continue to down the best espresso the city has to offer this season—sans seasonal flavors—I salute you.

Drink in good health.

I’d love to hear what your favorite local spot to get an espresso is. Share your thoughts with me at: danajeanyoga@gmail.com
