Theater: April: What’s Cookin’, Downtown?

Tickets are now on sale for the 2026 New York City Fringe Festival, or otherwise known as the FRIGID Fringe Festival. From Wednesday, April 1st to Sunday, April 19th, seventy-five independent productions will run in five venues across Manhattan—though FRIGID is notoriously known for their primary space, UNDER St Marks at 94 St Marks Pl. Other venues include The Rat NYC (Dumbo), Wild Project (East Village), and the Chain Mainstage and Studio (Midtown). A true labor of love, I would like to spotlight Erez Ziv (Managing Director), Hadley Todoran (Technical Director), Jaccoa Stills, and Joe Flynn (Co-Technical Coordinators).

A few blocks down on East 4th Street, the Community Arts Space at La MaMa Etc. will present the world-premiere of The Iguana Becomes Marco by Booth McGowan from April 1st through April 5th. In collaboration with Lisa Long Adler, the play revolves around Marco, a college graduate played by Marco Quesada in an unexpected meeting with an Iguana (Luke Wisniewski).

Extended through Sunday, April 26th, You Got Older at the Cherry Lane Theatre continues to run by popular demand. Written by Clare Barron and directed by Anne Kauffman, Alia Shawkat stars as Mae in a darkly comic play about transition, caregiving, and family. A New York Time’s Critic’s Pick, the 100 minute show runs in the oldest operating Off-Broadway house in Manhattan.

Directed by Michael Rohd and Annalisa Dias, Off the Record: Acts of Restorative Justice by James Scruggs runs between April 5th through April 19th, 2026 at HERE Arts Center in lower Manhattan. The performance is framed as an “intervention,” an interrogation of the American Criminal Justice System that is interactive, theatrical, and urgent. This piece was co-commissioned by Art2Action.
